Mountaineering ascents in Patagonia

At the NW of Lanin National Park in Patagonia Argentina, between the Huachulaufquen and Tromen lakes rises a cone alike mountain with eternal snow and 3776 m above sea level: the Lanín volcano, which in araucan language means "dead rock". It is the national park 'trademark' and reaching its summit it is the longed wish of many mountaineers. The mountaineering ascent through its northwest face or Normal route takes about 3 to 4 days depending on weather conditions. The sea level difference, the trekking terrain, the climbing equipment and the the daily mountaineering time makes this mountaineering expedition a DEMANDING ascent and difficult.
It is required to be physical and psychologically in good shape

            5th to 8th January 2009 / 2th to 5th February 2009
            9th to 12th of March 2009 / 6th to 9th of April 2009

Day by day itinerary:
Day 1:
Pick up at San Martin de los Andes Airport, transfer to Hotel. Meeting Mountain guide (AAGM) and staff. Check list. Farewell Dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel 3* / Superior INN
Meals: D: Dinner

Day 2:
Early wake up 6:00 a.m., Breakfast and transfer to Tromen Pass, 65 miles. (base of Lanin Volcano, 3750 feet) In the morning we start ascending, the first part of the trail goes through Lenga & Nire forest, crossing volcanic terrain and then reaching a rocky ridge called "Espina de pescado" (fish bone) which later on divides into rocky trails until we reach the mountain hut ( 7350 feet) In the afternoon we take a short hike in the mountain hut nearby area to practice mountain skills with the mountaineering technical equipment which we will use the following day for the mountain ascent.
Day Altitude gain: 3600 feet

Activity level: Moderate (5-7 hs)
Overnight: Mountain hut without services



Day 3:
Early in the morning (3- 4 a.m.) we take an abundant breakfast and then set off for the summit attempt. This day it is the most physical demanding of our mountaineering expedition. We climb over different types of snow and rocky terrain. We will take just a small backpack with water, some food and clothing. We arrive to the summit near noon, time for photographing, rest and lunch with spectacular views of other Chilean Volcanoes: Villarica, Llaima, Quetrupillan and also Mount Tronadorin Argentina.Day Altitude gain: 4000 feet . After lunch, descent to the mountain hut. Then we will continue descending to Tromen Pass, where our vehicle is waiting to go back to San Martin de los Andes. Celebration Dinner.
